Windies crush India to clinch U-19 World Cup

Three-times Under-19 Cricket World Cup champions, India, suffered a huge blow when the powerful West Indian junior cricket team trounced them by five wickets to clinch their maiden world title in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
West Indian batsman Carty smashed his first fifty of the tournament to guide the West Indies to victory in Dhaka last Sunday with three balls to spare, after India were bowled out for just 145 in 45.1 overs.
West Indian pacemen Alzarri Joseph and Ryan John grabbed three wickets each to restrict the highly-fancied Indian batsman, after the West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl.
Keemo Paul provided crucial support for Carty with an unbeaten 40 as the pair shared an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 69. The pair steered the West Indies home after they were struggling on 77-5 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar had given favourites India hope after taking 3-25 from his 10 overs to leave the West Indians reeling, but Carty and Paul kept their cool to deny him any more breakthroughs. All-rounder Paul, who had claimed 2-17 during his bowling spell, hit just one four and one six in his 68-ball knock.
West Indies captain Shimron Hetmyer praised his bowlers in particular for toppling the favourites. Fired-up paceman Joseph grabbed three wickets in his opening spell and finished with 3-39.
India's hard-hitting batsman Rishabh Pant was stumped in the first over by wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach, leaving the Indians, who were playing in their fifth final, unsettled early on.
Joseph, arguably the fastest bowler in the competition with deliveries of more than 145 kph (90 mph), then forced an edge from Anmolpreet Singh with a vicious short ball, before trapping skipper Ishan Kishan in front, to leave India struggling on 27-3.
Medium pacer John was the other standout for the West Indies, taking 3-38.
Sarfaraz Khan made a lone stand for India with 51 off 89 balls but wickets continued to tumble at the other end and India succumbed with almost five overs to spare.

Earlier, Pakistan crashed out of U-19 World Cup in the quarterfinal stage despite Umair’s heroic performance.
Pakistan wicket-keeper Umair Masood’s gutsy hundred went in vain as Pakistan were beaten convincingly by the West Indies in the last quarter-final of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Masood came in to bat after Pakistan were left reeling at 5-57 in the first 20 overs and smashed 113 off 114 balls before being dismissed by Ryan John in the 49th over. The innings included 15 fours and two sixes.
The wicketkeeper was assisted by Salman Fayyaz in a sixth wicket partnership of 164 to help Pakistan set West Indies a target of 228.
The West Indies openers gave the run chase a flying start as Gidrom Pope smashed a quick-fire 25 before falling out to Ahmed Shafiq’s left-arm spin.
Pope’s opening partner Tevin Imlach and number three batsman Shimron Hetmyer capitalised on the good start and put up a 77-run partnership for the second wicket.
Pakistan Under-19s seemed to take control once again when Hetmyer was stumped off Shadab Khan’s flighted leg-spinner followed by Imlach and Keacy Carty getting dismissed in quick succession.
However, a run-a-ball 37 by Shamar Springer and Keemo Paul’s 24 of 16 helped the Windies U-19s cruise swiftly towards a victory in the 40th over, confirming their semi-final berth.
Earlier, Rahul Dravid-coached India stormed into the final of the Under-19 World Cup with a convincing 97-run win over Sri Lanka in the first semi-final.
Anmolpreet Singh scored 72 and Sarfaraz Khan made 59 as India recovered from early setbacks to post 267 for nine after being put into bat on a misty morning in Dhaka.
Sri Lanka was down to 13-2 in reply before being dismissed for 170 in 42.4 overs to hand three-time champions India their fifth appearance in the final.
West Indies defeated Bangladesh in the second semi-final set up the title clash with strong Indian side in Dhaka.
India lost openers Rishabh Pant and Kishan by the 10th over to slip to 27-2 in conditions that suited Sri Lanka’s seam bowlers.
Sarfaraz and man-of-the-match Anmolpreet revived the innings by adding 96 for the third wicket with a mix of big shots and sharp ones and twos.
Sarfaraz hit six fours and a six while Anmolpreet, playing only his second match in the tournament, matched his senior partner with the same number of hits to the fence.
Sri Lanka grabbed six wickets in the final 10 overs, but India still managed to add 89 as Armaan Jaffer pushed the score along with a 16-ball 29.
Seamer Asitha Fernando was the most successful Sri Lanka bowler with 4-43, while new-ball partner Lahiru Kumara and spinner Thilan Nimesh picked up two wickets each.
Sri Lanka slipped to 42-3 following the loss of skipper and star batsman Charith Asalanka in the 10th over, before Kamindu Mendis (39) and Shammu Ashan (38) engineered a brief recovery.
But, once left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar had Mendis caught off a top-edged sweep and Ashan ran himself out, Sri Lanka caved in tamely against the steady India bowlers.
Dagar finished with impressive figures of 3-21, while seamer Avesh Khan claimed 2-41.
