A German Shepherd “presumed dead” after she fell off a fishing boat in the Pacific Ocean more than a month ago has been found safe and well after she swam to an island. Luna is a true survivor, as she refused to give up and stuck off through the waves towards shore, despite bad weather from El Nino storms. The castaway made it to an island 80 miles off the San Diego coast – and survived by hunting mice and small animals, until rescuers found her five weeks later. Her owner Nick Hayworth told search teams he was 90 per cent sure she would head towards land, and that she was a strong swimmer. Navy officials on the Coronado base searched the island nearest to where their boat had been fishing. But they didn’t find her, and Nick had to accept the probability that his pet was gone. “After a week, we considered her lost at sea and presumed dead,” Sandy DeMunnik, Navy public affairs officer, told ABC. But on Tuesday morning, guess who showed up to greet Navy staff arriving on the island for work? “They saw Luna just sitting on the side of the road wagging her tail,” Sandy said. “Keep in mind, there are no domesticated animals on the island, so it was a stunning sight”. They soon realised it was the same dog who had fallen into the sea more than a month earlier, and called Nick, who was understandably ecstatic to get the call.
