A goose feared to have been gunned down on the mean streets of Hertfordshire village did not meet a violent end after all, it has emerged. It was thought the popular villager died in a case of murder most fowl. But vigilantes wanting to avenge the much-loved goose can now stand down. A post-mortem was carried out on the animal, from the village in Sandon, and found that he didn’t die in a hail of bullets after all. The goose, known as Grumpy Gertie, instead died of natural causes. Exactly how these natural causes were mistaken for a bullet to the head is unclear, but a CT scan has confirmed is wasn’t a gangland killing. Police were inundated with calls after the goose corpse was found, and the murder mystery shocked the world. Tributes were paid to the goose — yes, really — with the flowers left at the scene. BBC Radio 2 listeners were last week urged to donate cash to help find the killers, and more than £275,000 was pledged, and police vowed to investigate.
