Workman suspended for lying down on the job… is it fair?

We have all probably had a moment at work when we feel like lying down and getting some shut eye. But this council worker, who decided to curl up next to a “road closed” sign while on a break, has paid the price by being suspended for a week. The man was pictured next to the sign by a passing driver in Warlingham at around 11.30am last week The image quickly went viral but  the 18-year-old says she doesn’t want him to lose his job. “I didn’t expect to see this when I drove around the corner. My music was playing really loud but he didn’t move – then I realised he was asleep,” she said. The gateway highways officer was taking a break from resurfacing works on Succombs Hill, a Surrey County Council spokesman confirmed.. He said: “We expect the highest standards from all our staff and, although the man involved was on his break, this behaviour falls well below that so he has been suspended for one week and warned about his future conduct.”
